Recently, according to foreign media data, from January to August 2024, Russia's plywood exports to China increased significantly, reaching an unprecedented level. Compared to the same period in 2023, exports increased by 72% to a total of 253,000 cubic meters. This significant increase boosted the total value of exports, which increased by 45% to $126 million despite a 16% drop in the average price per cubic meter to $499.
In terms of monthly data, Russian plywood exports to China showed an alarming growth trend in the first few months of this year. Exports rose 134% in January from a year earlier, after surging to 164% in February. By March, exports had nearly tripled from the previous year, up 236%. April's performance was even stronger, with a 344% increase, or more than four times last year's rate.
However, starting in May, the momentum of this strong growth has slowed, and the monthly increase has gradually leveled off. Exports fell slightly by 9.4% in August, the first decline in the year's growth. However, overall, despite small fluctuations in individual months, the export data for the first eight months of 2024 still shows the continued growth of Russian demand for the Chinese plywood market.
This growth is mainly due to the increasing trade cooperation between China and Russia and the strong demand for wooden products in the construction and home furnishing markets in China. Despite the decline in prices, plywood is still in strong demand in the Chinese market as a multi-purpose building and furniture material. Especially in the home and decoration industry, plywood is widely used in the manufacture of various types of furniture, driving the import demand for this material.
In the future, as China's demand for high-quality building materials continues to increase, Russian plywood exports are likely to continue to maintain an upward trend, further consolidating cooperation between the two countries in the field of wood products trade.
