In 2004, Su He, then chairman of the CPPCC Alxa League Committee in Inner Mongolia, took early retirement at 57 to fight desertification in his hometown, Ejin Banner. With no water, power, or seedlings, he and his wife lived in a crude hut at the parched Heishui City ruins, where annual rainfall is just 37 mm, launching a decades-long tree-planting campaign.
After losing 90% of his first saplings to sandstorms, Su replanted tirelessly, later sharing his desert-control expertise with local herders. Despite a 2018 accident that led to leg amputation, he returned to the forest on crutches. Over 17 years, he helped plant more than 250,000 saxaul trees across 6,300 mu, involving 300 herder households in restoring the fragile ecosystem.
Awarded the “50 Years of Glorious Party Membership” medal shortly before his death in 2021, Su embodied the ethos that true achievement lies not in personal accolades, but in leaving a greener homeland for future generations.
